How can I fix my shattered relationship with my parents?
We’ve put each other under a lot of stress this year and now I wanna fix the damage that resulted in. I just don’t know how. We used to be fairly close. Sure we’d argue and fight and stuff but there wasn’t the tension that there is now. I know I’ve broken their hearts and it breaks mine to see that and I really wanna make everything right again. I just got married this weekend and that’s what caused most of the stress and now that every thing’s over I hate looking around me and seeing what happened. I really need them right now but I have no clue how to reach out to them and they don’t know how to reach out to me. They’ve done so much for me and I just want everything to be how it was this time last year. I love them so much and really appreciate everything they’ve done and just want it fixed. Can anyone give me advice?
As a Psychologist I suggest you let honesty be your best friend. Explain to your parents first that you love them and hug them and kiss them. Tell them that you need them and that you are very sorry for everything you put them through in the past year and that you really want to fix everything. Explain to them and that even though you are married that you still need them and that you want to start a new and "improved" and "more mature" relationship with them. Tell them that you are extremely sorry for the mistakes you have made in the past but that you are willing to work on fixing them. Make sure that they know how much you love and need them. I think you will be surprised that if you are honest and loving that will meet you halfway. I wish you the best.
